How to Create XML Sitemap or Add Custom Robots.txt file in Blogger Blog

Hi! Guys, this is the first post in this blog about blogging. So, read this post carefully and know how to create an XML sitemap for getting better indexing in search engines. The XML sitemap is a list of all accessible web pages that is available on your blog. A sitemap of a website or blog helps various search engines like Google, yahoo and Bing to crawl your blog posts or pages easily. This is an important thing for every blogger and web developers.

Whenever you publish a post, sitemap helps to crawl and index very easily and fastly. Blogspot also generates an automatic sitemap for every blog and updates regularly whenever you post any article. You can view automatic sitemap generated by Blogspot by visiting:

But the problem is that the default XML sitemap of any blog contains only 26 latest posts. If you have more than 26 pages or posts on your blog, then there is a chance that they will never get properly crawled and indexed in the search engines. A proper or complete sitemap is one that has the ability to index all your pages in search engines quickly. In this post, I have discussed how to solve this kind of problems?.

Why can we not implement automatic blogger sitemap files?
As I discussed above that Blogger generates automatic sitemap and updates regularly whenever a new post is made. You can add the automatic sitemap to Google webmaster Tool easily and it works properly. But, whenever you need to change blogger sub-domain ( to the high level custom domain (, that sitemap will not work and does not index your posts in the search engines. At this moment, you need a complete XML sitemap file to overcome this problem.

How to generate a complete XML sitemap (for high-level domain or subdomain):
Step 1:
First of all, you need to visit : developed by Digital Inspiration.

Step 2:
Now, you have to type the URL of your blog with http:// in the text field given (You can type high-level or sub-domain URL). I am using the custom domain like in this case.

Step 3:
After typing the correct url, click on Generate sitemap button as shown in the given figure.

Step 4:
Once you have pressed "Generate site" button, you will get some XML code consisting of five lines depending on the number of articles in your blog. The screenshot of the generated XML sitemap is given below.

Step 5:
Now, copy the entire XML code and log in to your blogger account.

Step 6:
From the blogger dashboard, click on the "Setting" option-> "Search preferences" as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 7:
After than In the crawling and Indexing section, click on the "Edit" link beside the [Disable] option in "Custom robots.txt" The screenshot is given below:
Custom robots.txt

Step 8:
Now, you have to enable custom robots.txt by selecting the "yes" option. You will see a blank large text area as shown below.
enable custom robots.txt

Step 9:
You have to paste the generated XML sitemap (refer step 5) in this text area.

Step 10:
Finally, after pasting the generated code, you have to click on "Save changes" button.  Now, you have done successfully. That's it.
After finishing all these steps, there is no need to submit this sitemap to Google webmaster tools. They will crawl and index your web pages automatically. Google webmaster tool finds your sitemap using robots.txt from your blog.

You can able to view the XML sitemap of any blogger blog by just visiting:

There are other tools are available to create an XML, HTML sitemaps for blogger but this one is better for Blogspot platform. You have to keep in your mind that whatever platform you are using like Blogspot, WordPress etc. you have to create a complete sitemap to index your pages properly.

I hope guys, this post will be useful for better indexing of your article easily. You can share this article on facebook and twitter to help your friends.
